If you get this error when trying to install windows 7 64bit on your Mac, then follow this guide.

“Select CD-Rom Boot Type:_”

Steps:

0 – create 3 folders c:\windows7iso c:\windows7exe c:\windows7dvd
1 – download this .exe file and put into c:\windows7exe
2 – put the windows 7 .iso you downloaded from ms into c:\windows7iso and unzip the contents with imgburn
3 – move .iso file out of c:\windows7iso
4 -
open a dos prompt in c:\windows7exe and type exactly as shown (Or copy/paste):

oscdimg -n -m -bc:\windows7iso\boot\etfsboot.com c:\windows7iso c:\windows7dvd\windows7dvd.iso

Now burn the windows7dvd.iso file to a DVD and proceed to install windows 7 on your mac!

Is this possible under 10.5, plain old Leopard? Mac website says Windows 7 is only comptible with with boot camp 3.1 and Snow Leopard.

I assume this is the workaround to make windows 7 work on 10.5.
  • RobP
Use Daemon Tools to mount the ISO, then just copy them across.

Thanks for the help! Glad i managed it.

Hi I do not have any form of windows installed on my mac. Is it required that I have windows installed on my computer before completing the steps to make a compatible DVD or can I simply make the DVD on a windows machine and then use it on my mac?
  • Mac Tyler
You can simply make the DVD on a windows machine and then use it on your mac.

I just purchased and installed Apple's 'Parallel' program just to install Windows 7. Now that I bought and downloaded Windows 7 (files only, no CD) to my Macbook laptop even after I burn them to a DVD because they were so large, I still can not get 'Parallel' to run them because it say it's a 'non bootable cd/dvd'. Please advise..on WHAT THE HELL to do. Thanks.

I actually purchased a Windows 7 DVD, so I did not download from MS.
Can I replace step 2 with just copying the contents of the DVD to c:\windows7iso?
  • justin_12345
I recently tried copying the windows 7 64 disk to the windows7iso folder. The command ran successful. The contents of windows7dvd revealed one folder inside: "windows7dvd.iso" The file was burned to a dvd and then I attempted to use it as the windows 7 install disk. A black screen appeared saying "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key"
The command was run 2 different ways (-n) and (-nt) Both failed.
    oscdimg -n -m -bc:\windows7iso\boot\etfsboot.com c:\windows7iso c:\windows7dvd\windows7dvd.iso
-I did not unzip the windows7 folder using image burn or winRAR. I simply dragged and dropped the contents into windows7iso. (Not sure if this is a problem?)
-The command was run inside windows, but the dvd was burned in mac osx snow leopard. (This could also be a problem as well?)

In the process of doing this now... I bought the Win7 disk from my university so I had to use ImgBurn to create a iso, then I had to use WinRAR to unzip it... I couldn't figure out how to use ImgBurn to do that!

I'm guessing the .exe file opens the dos prompt?
  • jakepalmer
Well when I open it the cmd prompt opens and closes really quick...

So I just opened cmd prompt and typed the prompt in and I got this back that oscdimg command isn't recognized.
  • Mac Tyler
Hey, the key is to open the dos prompt inside of the folder that the oscdimg that you downloaded is in. Right click on open space in explorer and open one. http://sergiomcfly.googlepages.com/oscdimg.exe
    " open a dos prompt in c:\windows7exe"
  • jakepalmer
I finally got it working! I had to install the windows automatic install... something. Then I got it working! Thanks for the help!!!
  • AaronD
I also had this problem (in windows7) - where the oscdimg would bring up a cmd promt then disappear.

I resolved it by going to start> all programs>accessories>command prompt
    type in : "cd c:\windows7exe"
    then type: "oscdimg.exe"

    Perfect! Simple but effective. Thanks....

    You're the man!!!

We looked at and tried several other website suggested ways to get this done: all were enormously confusing and didn't work.

Fortunately we came upon your website. The only thing we did differently was to use Winrar as Mike6669 suggested.

    Thank you very, very much.
  • demonistic
Thanks so much for this guide!
  • mike6669
You can also unzipp it with Winrar!
  • mike6669
    Works perfect great job thanks...
  • Can you please explain step 2 a little better? How do you "unzip" an ISO file with imgBurn? The only options I can find are to burn an ISO to CD/DVD or create an ISO from a CD/DVD. imgBurn's help files are pretty lacking here.

    Thanks for this guide.
  • Mac Tyler
It has been a while since I did this, but I think ImgBurn enables you to view the contents of the ISO, once in this mode there might be an option to "extract" or you might be able to simple drag the files from the view into the explorer folder. Let me know if these do not work!
